The three dividend dates

  1. 1

    Ex-dividend date

From this day the stock trades without the dividend. Bought the day before or earlier — the dividend is yours. The price usually drops by roughly the payout on this day.

  2. 2

    Record date

The company fixes the list of shareholders it will pay. In the US it coincides with the ex-date.

  3. 3

    Payment date

The day the money reaches shareholders — usually one to four weeks after the ex-date.

Do not pay dividends · 67

These companies do not pay dividends: they reinvest profits in business growth, share buybacks and new projects. You can only earn on their price changes.
